Find Your Singing Voice Type

Learn to sing with SingoramaDetermining your singing voice type - soprano or mezzo for females, tenor or bass for males - enables you to find out what songs are most appropriate for you. If you are interested in a specific singing voice type you might want to refer to one on my related articles: soprano voice  , mezzo voice , tenor voice, bass voice

The five ingredients that determine a voice type are listed below.

Finding Singing Voice Type - Age:

Many singers are assigned a voice type as young singers, but all voices continue to grow and develop with age. Think about the last time you made a phone call and heard the sound of a strangers voice. Even if you didn't know the person on the other end, you could guess their age by listening to their speaking voice.

Finding Singing Voice Type - Range:

All the notes between and including the highest and lowest note that a singer can hit. Beginning singers usually have a shorter range than more advanced singers, because the high notes and low notes get stronger with practice. Knowing your range helps you figure out your voice type, because a bass can sing lower than a tenor, or a soprano can sing higher than a mezzo. Although several factors help determine voice types, the two big factors that most affect how you find your voice type are range and register transitions.

Finding Singing Voice Type - Register:

A series of adjacent notes that sound similar are produced in a similar fashion and have a similar tonal quality. The notes sound similar, because they're produced by the same muscles and often vibrate in a similar location in a singer's body. The transitions between registers can help you determine what voice type you are.

Finding Singing Voice Type - Tone:

Each voice has a specific tonal quality or color. Color is also called timbre. Words that describe tone include strident, dark, brilliant, metallic, ringing or shrill. Your neck or head size affects your voices tone quality. When trying to find out what your voice type is it's helpful to know about your voice tone. The tone of voice for a tenor is often much brighter than a bass.

Finding Singing Voice Type - Voice Strength:

Knowing your voice's strength also helps you determine your voice type. Sopranos and tenors have a stronger head voice than a mezzo or a bass. Likewise, the mezzo and bass have a stronger, meatier middle voice than the soprano or tenor.

Don't classify yourself too quickly based on the preceding factors. Focus on building great technique and see how your voice responds. To develop great singing technique you might want to read my reviews of the best singing lessons:
